    Although NPHC organizations are predominantly African-American, the organizations do not discriminate by race.

    Alpha Phi Alpha was founded nationally on December 4, 1906 at Cornell University, and December 5, 1973 at VCU.

    Sadie Alexander (Delta Sigma Theta) - Nation's first woman to earn a Ph.D. in economics.

    Upon graduating, most NPHC members remain active with their organizations throughout their lives.

    Stepping is only one small part of NPHC life.  In fact, many members do not step.

    Charles R. Drew (Omega Psi Phi) perfected the use of blood plasma as a life saving tool.

    Delta Sigma Theta was founded by women who felt that more should be done to improve civil rights.

    Kappa Alpha Psi's national guide right program provides guidance for at risk youth in the United States as well as internationally.

    70% of all black male lawyers are members of Alpha Phi Alpha.

    Omega Psi Phi contributes $50,000 to the United Negro College fund each year.

    Vivian White Marbury is the oldest founder of an NPHC organization to live until the age of 100 (Sigma Gamma Rho).

    All NPHC organizations have their own unique signs, colors, and calls.

    The Alphas and AKAs are known as the "first family" of historically African-American Greeks.

    Phi Beta Sigma was one of the key organizers for the Million Man March.

    During the 1950s, thousands of Omega men in every area of the country were actively involved in the fight to eliminate racial discrimination.

    Delta Sigma Theta led campaigns against the death penalty before civil rights organizations even addressed the issue.

    Omega Psi Phi was founded nationally on November 17, 1911 at Howard University, and March 20,1973 at VCU.

    Rosa Parks (Alpha Kappa Alpha) - Mother of the Civil Rights movement

    The founders of Delta Sigma Theta assisted Omega Psi Phi in gaining incorporation before they were even Deltas.

    NPHC organizations use Greek letters because of the Greek writing system and philosophies -  connection to Africa, particularly Egypt.

    Mary Washington (Sigma Gamma Rho) - First African-American CPA

    The NPHC was formed as a permanent organization on May 10, 1930 on the campus of Howard University.

    Iota Phi Theta was founded in 1963, long after the majority of the other NPHC organizations.  Their motto is "Building a tradition, not resting upon one."

    In addition to the NPHC, Alpha Phi Alpha, Iota Phi Theta, Kappa Alpha Psi and Phi Beta Sigma also a part of the North-American Interfraternity Conference.

    Bill Cosby (Omega Psi Phi) - Comedian, author, actor, producer

    Zeta Phi Beta sponsors over 175 Stork's Nests. The Stork's Nest program helps increase the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality.

    During the Great Migration, AKAs assisted the Travelers Aid Society, helping  Southern Blacks adjust to life in the North.     

    Omega Psi Phi does not have a mascot.  The dog image represents the tenacity and determination that Omega Men possess.

    Delta Sigma Theta' s motto is: Intelligence is the Torch of Wisdom.

    Sigma Gamma Rho's mascot is the French toy poodle.

    Phi Beta Sigma is the first NPHC organization that founded a Federal Credit Union.

    While Alphas and AKAs have a family relationship, Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta are the only fraternity and sorority that are constitutionally bound.

    Delta Sigma Theta has the largest number of chapters of any other fraternity or sorority in the world.

    Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies (Phi Beta Sigma) - 2006 National League MVP.

    Originally, when new members joined an NPHC organization they had a "probate."  This process is now called a "new member show."

    All 9 NPHC organizations assisted in aiding the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

    Alpha Kappa Alpha was very proactive in obtaining voting privileges for women.

    Iota Phi Theta's mascot is the Centaur.

    Sigma Gamma Rho's motto is: Greater Service, Greater Progress.

    W.E.B. DuBois (Alpha Phi Alpha) - Civil Rights leader and philosopher

    Sigma Gamma Rho established the first employment aid bureau during the Great Depression.

    Phi Beta Sigma was the first NPHC fraternity at VCU.

    Wilt Chamberlain (Kappa Alppa Psi) - NBA Hall of Fame, Center for the Lakers

    The Original Temptations are members of Phi Beta Sigma.

    NPHC is the governing council over the nine historically African-American fraternities and sororities.

    NPHC stands for the National Pan-Hellenic Council.

    The newest members of an NPHC organization are referred to as Neophytes.

    The AKAs and Alphas at VCU are the only two NPHC organizations founded with the same chapter name at their respective university - Theta Rho.

    Kappa Alpha Psi's official colors are crimson and cream.

    A Delta founder (Edna Brown) and an Omega founder (Frank Coleman), went on to marry.  Hence the term "Coleman Love" used amongst Deltas and Omegas.

    Iota Phi Theta's official colors are charcoal brown and gilded gold.

    Sigma Gamma Rho has over 500 chapters in the U.S., Bermuda, U.S. Virgin Islands, Germany, and Korea.

    Alpha Phi Alpha's motto is: First of All, Servants to All, We Shall Transcend All.

    Zeta Phi Beta sponsors the ZOL (Zeta Organizational Leadership) Program.  This program serves as a blue print for leadership development and enhancement.

    Omega Psi Phi's motto is: Friendship is Essential to the Soul.

    Delta Sigma Theta was the first Greek-letter organization at VCU.

    Johnnie Cochran (Kappa Alpha Psi) - Renowned lawyer

    Alpha Kappa Alpha was founded nationally on January 15, 1908 at Howard University, and April 24, 1974 at VCU.

    Kappa Alpha Psi was founded nationally on January 5, 1911 at Indiana University, and October 19, 1974 at VCU.

    The Phi Beta Sigma Federal Credit Union helps under-privileged people build equity.

    Sigma Gamma Rho was founded by 7 school teachers.

    Phi Beta Sigma was founded nationally on January 9, 1914 at Howard University, and August 21, 1970 at VCU.

    Langston Hughes (Omega Psi Phi) - Famous poet

    Zeta Phi Beta was founded nationally on January 16, 1920 at Howard University, and April 30, 1977 at VCU.

    Upon bringing in a new line of members, Neophytes become Prophytes.

    Calvin Murphy (Iota Phi Theta) - NBA Hall of Fame, Guard for the Rockets

    Omega Psi Phi's official colors are royal purple and old gold.

    Alpha Kappa Alpha's motto is: By Merit, By Culture.

    Hattie McDaniels (Sigma Gamma Rho) - First African-American actress to win an Oscar.

    Zeta Phi Beta and Phi Beta Sigma's official colors are royal blue and pure white.

    Sigma Gamma Rho's official colors are royal blue and gold.

    Zeta Phi Beta was the first sorority to form adult and youth auxiliary groups: the Amicae, Archonettes, Amicettes, and Pearlettes.

    Delta Sigma Theta's official colors are crimson and cream.

    Jackie Robinson (Alpha Phi Alpha) - First black man in Major League Baseball

    Alpha Phi Alpha's official colors are black and old gold.

    Omega Psi Phi's cardinal principles are: Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift.

    Members of Kappa Alpha Psi are often referred to as Kappas or Nupes.

    Alpha Phi Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi and Sigma Gamma Rho were the only NPHC organizations founded on a predominately white campus.

    The symbol for Phi Beta Sigma and Zeta Phi Beta is the white dove.

    Zeta Phi Beta's motto is: A community-conscious action-oriented organization.

    Alpha Kappa Alpha's official colors are salmon pink and apple green.

    Sigma Gamma Rho was founded nationally on November 12, 1922, at Butler University, and February 23, 1973 at VCU.

    Phi Beta Sigma was the first NPHC fraternity to have a member on a coin(George Washington Carver, one of America¡¦s greatest scientists).

    Alpha Phi Alpha's cardinal principles are: Manly Deeds, Scholarship, and Love For All Mankind.

    Delta Sigma Theta is often referred to as DST and its members are referred to as Deltas.

    Kappa Alpha Psi's motto is: Achievement in every field of human endeavor.

    Zeta Phi Beta was the first sorority to organize its affairs within a centralized,  national office, administered by a paid staff.

    Delta Sigma Theta was founded nationally on January 13, 1913 at Howard University, and May 14, 1970 at VCU.

    Members of Sigma Gamma Rho are often referred to as SGRhos.
